The natural flexibility in the rubber allows for flex so if the ground moves so will the rubber.  This flexibility also ensures great traction in snow and ice conditions, it even helps make ice removal easier since it doesn't freeze solid.

Finally it is a insulator, this means that your surface will be the first place the snow melts and in summer you will find it stays a bit cooler than many surfaces.
